The balance of the world is in a very sensitive state today. As time goes on, it becomes more urgent to address the needs of future generations. This article will discuss why western societies need to stop mowing the lawn.
We are all subjected to different seasons & weather at different times of the year according to our location on the planet. Western society uses what is known as the Gregorian calendar, which has complications involved such as leap years. Muslims use a lunar calendar, and we call it Hijri. Nowadays anyone can integrate the Hijri calendar with their own, using their smartphone.
This year, on the West Coast of the ‘United States of America’, Ramadan fell on the most critical part of Spring. Many people know that Spring is the time when bees come out of hibernation to pollinate. Others might know that some 85 percent of birds’ eggs are laid during spring.
Towards the middle of this Ramadan I’ve seen many baby animals beginning to explore the world. I already mentioned the bees, but I’ve also seen baby chipmunks, squirrels, and birds. Also, Dhul Hijjah is another sacred month in the Islamic Hijri calendar. It occurs before Ramadan. During Dhul Hijjah, I sadly saw an abnormally high amount of roadkill on the highway. I believe these were matured animals that might have been reproducing during this winters’ sacred month.
I’m aware of the fact that the lunar calendar is not based on the seasons, and that the sacred months could happen during any season. However, while the sacred months are observed at the same time everywhere in the globe, it is always springtime somewhere.
Sadly, state workers have been disturbing the growth of spring. They spend huge amounts of time & resources ensuring that huge swaths of land are mowed regularly. This might please some old people who don’t care about the earth, but the new generation undoubtedly wants to protect the environment to some degree, either for themselves or future generations.
The first thing that state workers don’t seem to realize is that during spring, the bees need flowers. Who knows how many other creatures might depend on the spring as they grow or emerge from hibernation. Also, state workers really have no right to be operating lawn-mowers, considering that they place limitations on the smog of citizens’ vehicles. It is totally hypocritical for the state to operate their own combustion-powered machinery without limits, while enforcing limitations on others combustion emissions.
There is plenty of problems in western society that are much more important than ensuring that state parks & highway borders are mowed regularly. The next generation is facing a huge set of obstacles as they grow in the ‘United States of America’, and nobody has any idea whether the state has the resources or courage to really solve these problems. Western society needs to accept this reality before they can prioritize & begin making progress. While it might seem unrealistic to adjust society to accomodate nature, society would look & feel much different. After all, agriculture & many other elements of society depend on a healthy ecosystem, & there is no longevity without stability.
